50. Delaware
Well I suppose every list has to start somewhere. And Delaware has the unfortunate title of being both the first US state admitted to the Union, but the last on my ranking. But why is it so low? Is there a deep-seated hatred I have for “the First State”? Well, no, not really.
Washington Crossing the Delaware by Emmanuel Leutz
My main issue with Delaware is just how little there is to say about it. I am of the opinion that there is beauty in every state, but other than what I’ve heard are some pretty neat beaches in the south, there are no mountains or even really any hills, and the cities aren’t much to note either.
There is also the historical aspect of Delaware being one of the 13 colonies. However, there’s not much that the state offers that is not one-upped by the other original colonies. But of course everyone remembers that Washington crossed the Delaware, right? Well, he crossed a section of the river between Pennsylvania and New Jersey so they don’t even have that!
So, other than being a tax haven for corporations and the home state of Joe Biden, I really do not have much to say. Now I will say that this placement could be subject to change once I visit the state again. My time in Delaware was short, and it wasn’t more than a few minutes of drive through. But it might take me a while for me to get there because, clearly, it's not high on my list to return to.
Essentially my thoughts on the state boil down to one of my favorite Simpsons jokes:
