Tagline: Are taglines just not a thing anymore?

Synopsis: An estranged family gathers together in New York for an event celebrating the artistic work of their father.

Man, it sure is nice to have a change of pace. In the sea of recent Adam Slopler movies, we finally get something not just not terrible, but straight up good. We watched it on my birthday in 2022, and what a delightful present.

Well, not actually all that delightful. This is a pretty depressing movie for sure. Seeing a family torn apart by it's patriarch just to see them brought together by him too, only now he's sick and in the hospital. It's pretty sad stuff, but I can also see a sense of relatability here. I know how frequent it can be for parents to cause rifts in their families, and as they age, it can be difficult for those family members to come back and feel like they need to be a family, despite all the hurt they may have done to each other.

The performances here are great, especially from Adam Sandler. Now that he is much older than when he started, you can see him take his roles very seriously when he wants to. And here especially you witness a maturity in him that I don't know if we've gotten in another Sandler movie. Okay, yes, maybe it's a little funny to say this about someone older than my parents, but I think it's always been there. It's just satisfying to see him be the family man you know he is off screen.

I haven't really mentioned it, but Sandler always goes out of his way to put the people he cares about in his movies (for better, or for worse). You can see this with his friends and especially his family. Coming up soon, you'll see Sandler's family take on some larger roles, and sure, call it nepotism, but it's also someone who wants to see the people he loves succeed. It means that in these family centric movies, he fits in so well. He's a man that will always want to take care of his loved ones, no matter all those struggles I'm sure he must go through.

So with all that, I can say this was a very good movie. Don't know if I'll ever watch it again though. I'm just happy I got to have a break from Sandy Wexler level quality movies.
